FAQ

How long has PVC Fencing been on the market?
A: PVC or uPVC (Vinyl) Fencing has been on the overseas market since the 1980's. PVC fencing is one of the fastest growing fencing products in the industry. Value Fencing experience a similar growth increase in South Africa for close to a decade now.
How strong is the PVC fence?
A: PVC fencing is very strong when properly installed. Posts are filled with re-enforced concrete. It is widely used for perimeter fence all over the world. Value Fencing have installed countless PVC Palisade, Private & Semi-Private Boundary fences all over South Africa at private residences, Blocks of flats, Estates & Complexes. It can break if subjected to a direct impact, e.g. a motor vehicle running into the fence, however if any one of the fencing items (Rail, Pickets, Panels or Posts) do get damaged, it can easily be replaced.

Ensure that your Contractor supply you with a Calcium Carbonate free PVC as this additive is a cheap alternative for our TiO2 and makes PVC very brittle & not properly UV Resistant. Insist on your Contractor to supply you with a Guarantee on the product from their supplier.

How will the wind affect the fence?
A: Again, if installed properly, normal wind loads will have no effect on it at all. Value Fencing's PVC fencing products have been designed to withstand normal wind loads. The amount of wind loads are determined by the Post installation. Our posts are filled with re-enforced concrete, making it a re-enforced concrete column with 2,8mm thick PVC outer sleeve.
How strong is your Balustrade?
A: Value Fencing uPVC Balustrades are very strong. Ours is one of the very view out there (and the ONLY PVC one) to actually PASS the Engineer's Pendulum test where a 40kg sand bag is swung from 1,6m away onto the Balustrade. Ours passed with NO damage at all. (See Video on our website Rails are notched & can’t pull out after being inserted into posts. Each post is mounted with 2x 600mm re-bar rods, fixed with epoxy, filled with 30MPA concrete. Our Balustrade conform to the principle criteria for Balustrades & railings being min 1m high with slats spaced 100mm or less apart.
Are building plans required for uPVC fences?
A: This depends on the *Local Municipal By laws & Estate Rules & Regulations, but normally if there is no foundation work required & the fence is under 1,8m high, it will not require plans*.
How does one clean the fence, if dirty?
A: When your fence becomes dirty, because of the exposure of the elements, a mild solution of household detergent (Domestos) and water should be sufficient. Tough stains can be removed with very fine 1200 grit sand paper or one can use baking soda to scrub the stubborn stains with a soft cloth. P-11 Car polish can also be used.
Will PVC crack, chip, peel, rot or tear? & how long will it last?
A: NO, Value Fencing's PVC will not crack, chip, peel, rot or tear. Value Fencing's uPVC fencing should last in excess of 50 years & our PVC material is guaranteed for 20 Years!! (See Guarantees page).

Ensure that your Contractor supply you with a Calcium Carbonate free PVC as this additive is a cheap alternative for our TiO2 and makes PVC very brittle & not properly UV Resistant. Insist on your Contractor to supply you with a Guarantee on the product from their supplier.

Will the colour change in the sun?
A: NO, Value Fencing's PVC is UV stabilized. It is UV resistant at 4 times the Industry standard using 12% Titanium Tri-Oxide (Ti02) as Impact modifier, as opposed to the 3% industry standard for External uPVC. Our uPVC incredibly resistant to chemical erosion & is weather-resistant.

The cheaper alternative using Calcium Carbonate is NOT UV resistant & is very brittle.

Is Your PVC fence safe?
A: Because there are no protruding sharp nails, screws and splinters, injury is unlikely. PVC is also non-toxic & Fire retardant.
How safe are your pool fences & Gates?
A: Our uPVC Pool fence conforms to the National Building Regulations & Municipal By laws for Pool fence & Gates. They are a minimum of 1,2m high with slats spaced at 100mm or smaller apart. Gates are fitted with Auto closing hinges & 2x Auto latching latches (To close from open position 30cm or larger) for child safety, and can also be locked via a pad lock.
Will i have to fight with my neighbour over who gets the "ugly" side?
A: NO, Value Fencing's uPVC fencing looks the same on both sides, so your neighbour will have the same beautiful finish on his side.
Are the Posts Concreted?
A: Yes, our posts are planted with & filled with re-enforced 42.5 Black cement 30MPA concrete mix, making it stronger than conventional concrete posts as it is effectively a concrete column in a protective PVC sleeve.
Can you install on concrete slabs or tiles?
A: Yes. Posts can be mounted by drilling into the sub base & installing a minimum of 2x Toughened steel Re-Enforcing rods with epoxy, sealed waterproof, then filled with concrete.
Do you have matching gates?
A: Yes, we do pedestrian, courtyard, dual, driveway sliding & dual swing gates in all our fence styles as well as in any custom combination & size required. They can be easily automated & electronic access control can be fitted on request.
What is your average Lead Time from confirmation to Installation?
A: Our lead time is normally around 2 to 3 weeks from receipt of the confirmation deposit. This period is weather related & may vary in our busy year end period. For smaller jobs the lead time will be less, but might be longer for larger jobs.
Are Value Fencing prices Market related?
A: The initial cost of Value Fencing's uPVC products could be higher than steel and concrete fences. However, when compared on the long run, considering life span and the fact that PVC fencing remains maintenance-free, while other fencing increase in maintenance and repair costs (especially the labour costs), it is clearly better value for money. It can NOT Rust or Rot & NEVER needs painting.
Will an Edge Trimmer damage the fence?
A: The nylon string from a Weed Eater will not damage the posts, but direct contact with lawn and garden tool's metal blades will damage the fence. Use caution when operating any rotating garden equipment around the fence area, especially commercial equipment, which are more aggressive.
Will Veld fires cause the fence to burn?
A: Value Fencing's PVC is "Fire Retardant" and is classified as "self-extinguishing" and will not readily ignite, but grass fires will damage the fence. These parts are easily replaceable.
  • PVC is an inherently fire resistant plastic, the only exception among the general-purpose plastics, since it contains more than 50% of chlorine.
  • When PVC products are burned, hydrogen chloride gas resulting from thermal cracking slows down the continuous combustion reaction and prevents burning progress by warding off the PVC product surface from oxygen in the air. The gas is also detectable by its – highly unpleasant - odour at concentrations well below those that could be harmful to health. This feature allows early detection of a fire. Gaseous hydrochloric acid is, for example, much less hazardous than carbon monoxide, which is narcotic and has no smell and can rapidly lead to paralysis and death.
  • Other advantages of PVC are that it releases less combustion heat than other plastics - hence contributes less to maintaining and spreading fire – and produces no or very few flaming droplets or debris. Burning PVC yields an expanded carbonaceous structure usually called 'intumescence'. This structure forms a thermal barrier protecting underlying parts. In some cases, such as pipes, PVC can even prevent fire spreading by blocking the orifices through walls or floors.
  • Since PVC is highly fire resistant, it is widely used in exterior construction materials such as window profiles, siding boards, or interior housing materials, such as wall-covering and flooring. It is also used in industrial facilities such as tanks, ducts, parting strips, or for sign boards, corrugated boards, and cable coverings. There may be many ways of evaluating the fire retarding properties, but the oxygen index can be used for the evaluation with a comparatively high precision and reproducibility of the results. It represents the minimum oxygen concentration required for the test piece to continue burning in mixed gas of oxygen and nitrogen. When the value is higher, the fire retarding property is higher. Since the oxygen concentration in the air is 21%, a plastic with an oxygen index greater than 22 has self-extinguishing property, while a plastic with oxygen index smaller than 21 is flammable.
Will it mildew or mould?
A: PVC fencing will attract mould when subjected to long periods of damp weather, however, it can be easily cleaned with a mild household detergent (Domestos) and water, or with a high pressure washer.
